From family vineyard to regional tourism leadership
Petr's path into senior leisure tourism wasn't planned. When he took over his family's wine farm near Valtice in 2007, something unexpected started happening — older cyclists began showing up on the rural paths, looking for gentle routes through the vineyards. He noticed they'd come back. They'd tell friends. But there weren't any real resources for them. No maps designed for their pace. No routes that made sense for riders over 55.
That gap bothered him. So he pursued formal education in Tourism Management at Masaryk University in Brno while continuing to develop cycling paths through the vineyard landscapes. He wasn't thinking big at first — just trying to solve a local problem.
In 2011, everything shifted. Petr partnered with the Moravian Tourism Board to create the first certified accessible cycling network specifically designed for older riders. That network has since expanded to 12 interconnected routes spanning 280 kilometers across the region. What started as one person's frustration became a model that other regions have studied.
The secret wasn't complicated. He worked directly with gerontologists and occupational therapists to understand what senior cyclists actually needed — not assumptions, but real conversations about physical capabilities, safety concerns, and what makes a ride enjoyable. He learned that a route designed for people over 55 doesn't just mean flat terrain. It means rest stops that aren't gimmicky. Signage that's actually readable. Surfaces that won't shake your joints. Cultural experiences woven in, not added as an afterthought.
Today at defyingsilenceband, Petr leads research and content development on senior-friendly outdoor activities. But he's not interested in theoretical work. He wants older adults to feel confident on a bike again — to remember what independence feels like. He believes the gentle paths and wine villages of Moravia offer something you can't get in a gym: real exploration, real physical challenge scaled appropriately, and real community.
His background includes work with local tourism boards and leisure activity operators throughout the Czech-Moravian region. His degree in Tourism Management is grounded in real experience managing routes, coordinating with stakeholders, and watching what actually works versus what looks good on paper. He's pragmatic. Data-driven. But he also remembers why this started — someone on a bike, riding through vineyards, feeling alive.
